“How to Tie Up Your Reins- Half Hitch” - Dan and Dawn Chambers

Today we're bringing you another tack tip. This week, we're discussing the use of split reins and how to lead a horse without letting the reins fall. Once a rein falls, we all know the horse is likely to step on it, potentially breaking it or causing it to slide down the horse's neck and pull on the bit.

To prevent this, take your off rein and put a half hitch in it over the saddle horn. With a half hitch, the rein will stay securely on the horn and won't fall or get pulled down. Now your horse is ready to be led by one rein.

To do a half hitch, pick up your rein, put a simple twist in it, and then lay it over the saddle horn.

As we all know, in the old Buckaroo traditions, we aren't supposed to lead our horses by the bridle reins, but in today's working cowboy situations, that's sometimes not feasible. For example, if you're coming out of the show pen, you need to be able to lead the horse by the bridle reins safely.
