Why We Teach Our Horses to Pick Us Up From the Fence
(Featuring Ebony – Available! AQHA Mare)

One of the most useful skills we teach our horses here at Chambers Ranch Horsemanship is how to sidepass over and pick us up whether we’re on a fence, mounting block, or even a tree stump out on the trail.

It’s not just a cool trick. It’s functional, confidence-building, and makes life easier for both horse and rider.

▶️ Watch the video below to see Ebony demonstrate it:

If you’ve ever had to dismount mid-ride, you know how hard it can be to find the right place to get back on. When your horse knows how to come to you no matter where you are it gives you confidence and independence. It’s a skill I taught my own kids when they were small and riding big horses. They learned problem-solving, built independence, and didn’t need help getting back on because their horses had the tools to come to them.

It also makes things safer. Climbing on from an elevated surface puts less strain on your horse’s back. And having a clear, practiced cue for them to come to you, no matter where you are, can keep everyone calmer and more in control when things don’t go exactly as planned.

This is the kind of foundation we build into every horse we train.

Meet Ebony

Ebony is a coming 4-year-old AQHA mare and one of our available sale horses. She’s a beautiful example of the kind of partner we aim to produce! Honest, responsive, and enjoyable to ride.

She’s well-rounded with arena experience, show pen exposure, and miles out on the trail. She’s been around cattle, has great ground manners, and is soft and willing under saddle. Whether you’re showing, checking cattle, or just enjoying a ride, she’s ready to go to work.

What really makes Ebony special is her try. She’s a thinker. She wants to connect. She enjoys having a job, and she’s always up for a challenge.
