Long Yearlings

Long Yearlings

Well-bred young horses we've known from the beginning.

Our long yearlings have been part of our program since birth or weaning. Some were foaled here at the ranch through our partnership with Double J Bar S Quarter Horses, while others came to us as weanlings from Terry Adams Quarter Horses.

Because we've had the opportunity to watch these horses grow up, we know much more than what you can see in a picture. We've watched their personalities develop, handled them through the different stages of growing up, and gotten to know each horse as an individual.

If you're looking for a young prospect to develop into your next ranch, versatility, show, or all-around horse, take a look at the horses currently available below.

Proudly Available for Your Consideration

JJS Smokn Bonita

"Smoke"

2025 AQHA • Black • Gelding

Smoke is a sweet, laid-back young horse with a really relaxed, easygoing personality. He's the kind that tends to go with the flow, takes things in stride and doesn't feel like he needs to be in the middle of everything. He's easy to be around and has been a quiet, agreeable member of the herd.

Between his breeding and the disposition he's already showing us, I'm excited to see the kind of horse Smoke develops into. He has the makings of a nice, easygoing prospect with the potential to be a versatile horse both on the ranch and around cattle. And it certainly doesn't hurt that he's got one of the cutest little heads in the pasture.

Bonita Augie Badger

"Jazz"

2025 AQHA • Grey • Gelding

Jazz has a great personality and is very inquisitive and interactive with people. I really like how this young horse is put together. He's nice and stocky with plenty of eye appeal and he's showing a lot of potential as he grows up.

His full sister has developed into a very versatile, good-minded horse who has been successfully shown in ranch riding, worked cattle and sorting pens, started in roping, used for ranch work, and ridden out on the trails. Jazz is showing many of those same easygoing, willing qualities, and I'm excited to see where his versatility takes him as he continues to develop.

Bonita Peppy Jazz

"Marty"

2025 AQHA • Chestnut • Gelding

Marty is one of those young horses I really enjoy being around. He's got a great personality and mind, is easygoing and confident, and tends to take new things in stride.

His full brother developed into an extremely versatile horse who was successfully shown as a two-year-old, trail ridden, taken overnight camping, used for ranch work and cattle, and even introduced to cowboy mounted shooting. He handled a wide variety of experiences with the same good-minded attitude, and we're seeing many of those same qualities in Marty. I'm really excited about the versatility this young horse is showing the potential to have.

Bonita Misty Blue

"Misty"

2025 AQHA • Blue Roan • Filly

Misty is a really nice, quiet young filly that's coming along well. She's got plenty of eye appeal and a nice way about her.

Her full siblings have been athletic, good-minded, eager to please and level-headed. They've done well in their training, with one of her full brothers currently coming along nicely under saddle and showing a lot of potential both on the ranch and working cattle. We're excited to see how Misty continues to develop as she grows up.

Bonita Major Chic

"C3PO"

2025 AQHA • Sorrel • Gelding

C-3PO is inquisitive, brave and very people-oriented. He's usually one of the first ones to come see what you're doing and has plenty of personality, while still being respectful and easy to be around.

His full brother has developed into a laid-back, easygoing and versatile horse who is being used for ranch work and cattle, ridden out on the trails, and successfully shown. We're seeing many of those same qualities developing in C-3PO and are excited to see what he becomes.

Bonita Valentino

"Boss Haus"

2025 AQHA • Grey • Gelding

Boss Haus is really starting to come into his own as he gets older, and we're seeing more and more of the horse he's developing into. He's got a confident way about him, along with really nice size, bone and substance. He's developing into a taller, leaner young horse with an athletic look that makes me excited to see how he continues to mature.

He's been easy to work with, eager to please and tends to take things in stride. With his size, build and athletic potential, I think he could be an interesting prospect for several different directions, whether that's developing into a ranch or roping horse or exploring disciplines like English riding, dressage or jumping. I'm looking forward to seeing how he fills out and what his natural abilities look like as he gets older.

Bonita Copper Cisco

"Cisco"

2025 AQHA • Buckskin • Stallion

Cisco is a young horse I'm really excited about. He's showing the same kind of laid-back, easygoing mindset we've seen in his full siblings, along with a natural ability to take new things in without getting in a hurry or making a big deal out of them.

We've had the opportunity to develop his full siblings here at the ranch, and they've consistently impressed us with how easy they've been to bring along. They're trainable, level-headed horses with natural balance, self-carriage and really nice movement. They have a nice ranch horse stride and the kind of movement and presence we like to see in the ranch riding pen.

We're already seeing many of those same qualities developing in Cisco. He's been easy to work with, willing to learn and has that same relaxed way of taking things as they come. Between what we're seeing in him now and what we've experienced with his full siblings, I'm really excited to see the horse Cisco develops into.

Bonita Foxy Rey

"Woodrow"

2025 AQHA • Bay • Gelding

Woodrow is one of those young horses I'm naturally drawn to. He's quiet, laid-back and easygoing, with a really relaxed way about him. He enjoys interacting with people and will come up to see you, but he's never pushy or worried about being the center of attention.

Working with him, he just seems to take things in stride and naturally wants to be a quiet, agreeable horse. He's pleasurable to be around, easy to work with, and doesn't seem to get worked up over much. There's just something about this nice bay that gives him a little bit of that “it” factor for me, and I'm really excited to see the horse he grows into.

Why We Keep Going Back to Blackie Horses

Peppy Bonita Rey, better known around here as Blackie, is the sire of all of the long yearlings currently in our program. And there's a reason we keep going back to his horses.

We've started and developed a lot of Blackie offspring over the years, and we've come to really appreciate the minds, trainability and versatility we consistently see in them. They tend to be willing horses that learn well, retain what they've been taught and handle time off without feeling like you have to start all over again when you come back to them.

That's something I really value because most people aren't able to ride their horse every day. They have jobs, families and lives outside of the barn. Having a horse that can learn, retain what you've taught them and come back after some time off ready to pick up where you left off is very important.

Blackie himself spent his career as a working ranch horse. He worked cattle, covered country, worked in the sorting pen and developed good cow sense through actually having a job to do. He could also clean up and head to a local show, but his career was spent primarily working rather than being campaigned in the show pen.

We've had the opportunity to ride Blackie ourselves, and he's simply a really nice stallion to be around. Over the years, we've liked his offspring enough that we've intentionally sought them out. They're horses we've trusted our own kids to ride, and they're still the kind of horses we want in our program today.

For us, it isn't about having a pedigree that looks good on paper. It's about knowing the horses behind these young prospects, having experience with the family and liking what we've consistently seen when it's time to actually develop them into riding horses.
